Established in 1964, the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale, or Inserm) is a public scientific and technological institution that falls under the dual supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and the Ministry of Health. Inserm's researchers are dedicated to studying all diseases, from the most common to the rarest, through their work in biological, medical, and population health research.
With a 2013 budget of €927 million, Inserm supports nearly 300 laboratories throughout France. Its 1,200 teams encompass nearly 15,000 researchers, engineers, technicians, managers, hospital-university professionals, and post-doctoral researchers. It is currently headed by Yves Levy.
Inserm is a member of the National Alliance for Life and Health Sciences, which was founded in April 2009 with the CNRS, CEA, Inra, Inria, IRD, Institut Pasteur, the Conference of University Presidents (CPU), and the Conference of Regional and University Hospital Center Directors General. This alliance is part of a research system reform policy aimed at better coordinating the roles of different actors and strengthening France's position in this sector through concerted programming.
